In recent years, the Taushubetsu Bridge experienced collapses of its side walls from mid to late April, as the snow began to melt. This year, the bridge passed through that period without
incident, leading us to hope it would remain intact throughout the year.
However, unexpectedly at the end of June, a section of the wall collapsed. The damage occurred at the central arch's supporting pier, exposing the internal rocks. According to visitors at the
site, the collapse appears to have taken place between June 28th and 29th.
The phrase 'it could collapse at any time' has become a cliché when discussing the Taushubetsu Bridge, but it seems we are truly entering a time when this is a reality.
ここ数年、雪解けが進む4月中旬から下旬にかけて側壁の崩落があったタウシュベツ川橋梁。
今年はその時期をなにごともなく過ごしたので、このまま無事に一年持ちこたえるものだと思っていました。
けれどこの6月末、前触れなく壁が一カ所崩れ落ちました。
崩れたのは11連の真ん中のアーチを支える橋脚部分の壁。内部に詰められた岩石があらわになっていました。
同時期に現地を訪れた人たちの話を総合すると、6月28日から29日にかけての間に崩落が起きたようです。
「もういつ崩落しても不思議ではない」とは、タウシュベツ川橋梁を語るときにすっかり常套句になってしまいましたが、いよいよ本当にそうした時期を迎えているようです。
