〈10年前の今日、無名の氷と橋を撮っていた〉
10年前の今日、早朝の豊頃町・大津海岸には見渡すかぎりに氷が打ち上がっていました。
この氷は十勝川が流れ込む河口付近に打ち上げられるもので、朝日の光を浴びると宝石のように輝きます。今でこそ「ジュエリーアイス」と呼ばれ、冬の観光スポットのひとつになっていますが、当時はまだ無名な海岸氷にすぎず、訪れる人もない夜明け前の浜は貸し切り状態でした。
タウシュベツ川橋梁もまだそれほど知られていなかった時期のこと。価値があるのに埋もれたままのスポットが他にも北海道に、十勝に残っていたことに胸が高鳴るのを感じながら撮っていたものです。
「ジュエリーアイス」と名前が付き、一気に有名になっていくのはこの翌年からのことでした。その傾向がはっきり分かっておもしろいのがGoogleトレンドです。
夜明けまで大津海岸で撮影したあとは、糠平に戻ってタウシュベツ川橋梁に向かいました。
この2024－25年の冬は糠平湖の水位の低さが話題ですが、10年前の冬もだいぶ水位が低かったようです。
橋までの道すがらで見かけたのは、毎シーズン、湖岸から辺りを睥睨するオジロワシ。切り株の上から、ワカサギ釣り客が残すウグイを狙っているところでした。
橋を近くで見てみると、冬の湖が早い時期に結氷したためか、すでに3分の1ほど姿を見せている橋の上に氷が乗っていました。
「今年中には崩れるのではないか」。この頃から、毎年そう言われているタウシュベツ川橋梁は今年もまだ崩れずにあります。
わずか10年、されど10年。人影もまばらだった大津海岸が、今では観光シーズン中に多くの人で賑わうようになりました。タウシュベツ川橋梁もよく知られるようになり、今では糠平湖の水位変動が話題になるほど注目されています。
そのどちらも、注目される前から撮れていたことはとても幸運でした。
Ten years ago today, early in the morning at Otsu Beach in Toyokoro Town, the shore was covered with ice as far as I could see. This ice washes up near the mouth of the Tokachi River, and when the morning sun hits it, it sparkles like jewels. It’s now called “Jewelry Ice” and has become a popular winter attraction, but back then it was just a nameless chunk of ice on the beach, with hardly anyone around before sunrise.
Around that same time, the Taushubetsu Bridge wasn’t very famous yet either. It made me excited to think there were still so many hidden gems in Hokkaido and Tokachi, waiting to be discovered.
“Jewelry Ice” got its name and shot to fame starting the following year.

After shooting photos at Otsu Beach until dawn, I headed back to Nukabira and went to see the Taushubetsu Bridge. The winter of 2024–25 has brought talk about the low water levels in Lake Nukabira, but it seems the water was pretty low ten years ago, too.
On my way to the bridge, I saw a white-tailed eagle perched on a stump, scanning the shoreline for fish left behind by wakasagi anglers.
When I got closer, I noticed about one-third of the bridge was already peeking out of the ice—probably because the lake had frozen early that year—and ice had even formed on top of it.
People have been saying, “It might collapse this year,” for a long time now. But even this year, the Taushubetsu Bridge is still standing.
Just ten years, but in some ways a lifetime. Where Otsu Beach used to be empty, now it’s crowded during tourist season. The Taushubetsu Bridge has also become well-known, and even the changing water levels of Lake Nukabira make the news these days.
I feel really lucky to have photographed both before they got so famous.
