1月半ばの糠平湖では、すでに音更川に沿って氷が割れ始めている。例年であれば厳寒期に差しかかったといって差し支えないこの時期に、早くも水面が開けてきた。
本来は2月に見られるキノコ氷もまた、湖底にぽつぽつと数を増やしつつある。年により、場所により、数も形も異なるこの自然の造形。湖底に沈んだ切り株と分厚く張る氷、冬の水位低下などの諸条件が整う必要があるため、国内で見ることができるのはおそらくこの糠平湖だけだろう。
一日に20センチずつ、コンスタントに下がりつづける湖の水位。タウシュベツ川橋梁は、その全体が姿を見せるまであと1メートル強となった。昨シーズンに湖への立ち入りが禁止となった水位までは、残り1メートル弱だ。このペースで水位低下がつづけば、数日のうちに、昨シーズンの最終日と同じ水位になる。
この冬、湖上をタウシュベツ川橋梁まで歩いていくことができる時期は終盤に差しかかったと言えそうだ。
タウシュベツ川からも水音が聞こえ始めている。その音を耳にするだけでも、まるで春がすぐそこまで近づいているかのような感覚になってくる。
Mid-January at Lake Nukabira and the ice along the Otofuke River is already breaking. Even though it's still early for the deep cold season, the water surface is opening up.
Mushroom ice, usually seen in February, is already popping up on the lakebed. This unique ice formation changes in number and shape every year and requires specific conditions like sunken tree stumps, thick ice, and low winter water levels. It’s a sight you probably only see here at Lake Nukabira.
The lake’s water level drops steadily by 20 centimeters every day. The Taushubetsu Bridge is just over a meter away from being completely visible. We are also less than a meter from the water level that led to last season's closure of the lake. If this trend continues, we'll reach the same water level as the last day of last season in just a few days.
This winter, it seems we’re nearing the last few days when you can walk across the lake to the Taushubetsu Bridge.
Sounds of flowing water from the Otofuke River are starting to be heard. Just listening to these sounds makes it feel like spring is just around the corner.
