〈灰白色の空の下を〉
12年前の今日、2013年2月11日に撮影したタウシュベツ川橋梁の写真を見返している。あの冬（2012～13年）は、糠平湖の水位が高かった。2月中旬にさしかかっても湖上がワカサギ釣りで賑わっていたのは、立ち入りが制限されていなかったから。それだけをとっても、今年の冬とはだいぶ様子が違う。
気温もだいぶ低かったようで、記録を見直してみると、一日の平均気温が連日氷点下10℃を下回っていた。そうなると、水面を覆った氷がしっかりと厚くなる。水位が下がることで割れ、時には立ち上がることもある氷。そこに、重さ数キロはありそうな石が付いたまま浮いているものさえあった。
この日は昼頃に糠平湖を歩きはじめていた。今にも雪を降らせそうな灰白色の空の下、タウシュベツ川橋梁へ向かう。一通り撮影を終えて戻るころには、やはり大粒の雪に包まれた。
Twelve years ago today—February 11, 2013—I took this photo of the Taushubetsu Bridge. That winter (2012–2013), the water level at Lake Nukabira was high. Even in mid-February, the lake was still open for anyone, and many people were out ice fishing for wakasagi (smelt). It’s quite different from how things look this winter, where access can be limited.
Temperatures back then were apparently pretty low, too. Checking the old records, I saw that the average daily temperature was below –10°C (about 14°F) for several days in a row. With that kind of cold, the ice covering the lake gets really thick. As the water level drops, the ice can crack or even tilt upward, and I remember seeing chunks of ice with rocks—easily several kilos—still stuck on them, seemingly “floating” above the lakebed.
That day, I started walking across Lake Nukabira around noon. Under a grayish sky that looked ready to drop more snow at any moment, I headed toward the Taushubetsu Bridge. By the time I finished taking photos and made my way back, I found myself wrapped in big, falling snowflakes—just as I’d suspected might happen.
