〈ひときわ青い冬〉
あの冬は、糠平湖のアイスバブルがいっきに注目を集める契機になったシーズンだった。6年前の2019年のことだ。冬のはじまりからなかなか雪が積もらず、湖面一面に広がるアイスバブルを見ることができた。
冬の後半になって雪が積もってしまうと、湖面のアイスバブルは隠れてしまう。けれども、人造湖である糠平湖ならではの光景が現れるのはそのあとのこと。水位の低下によって氷が割れるため、その断面にアイスバブルを見ることができる。割れた氷の断面に、白い気泡が散らばる様子は、見るたびに自然の不思議を感じさせてくれる。
この冬にもう一つ印象的だったのは、氷の青さ。凍っていく過程で中の不純物が抜けていくと、氷はこうして青みを帯びるという。
この2月13日も、いつものようにタウシュベツ川橋梁まで歩き、そして帰る。その道中で青く光る湖面がところどころ視界に入るのはなかなか気分の良いものだった。
タウシュベツ川橋梁は、もう全体が氷上に姿を見せていた。“幻の橋”と呼ばれるほど、湖の水位に左右されて見映えが大きく変わる橋。こうして何年も通っても、そのバリエーションの多さには驚かされる。同じ時期であっても、毎年その様子がことなるので飽きることはない。
That winter—six years ago in 2019—really put Nukabira Lake’s ice bubbles in the spotlight. Early in the season, we didn’t get much snow, so the entire surface of the lake was covered with visible bubbles.
Later in the winter, once the snow finally piled up, those bubbles got hidden. But that’s when something unique to this man-made lake comes into play. As the water level drops, the ice cracks, and you can see those bubbles in the cross-sections of the ice. It’s always fascinating to see those white clusters of air—like tiny beads—embedded in the ice layers.
Another thing I remember well about that winter was how vivid the ice looked. I’ve heard that during the freezing process, impurities get filtered out, which makes the ice appear so intensely blue.
On February 13, I did my usual routine: walked out to the Taushubetsu Bridge and back. Along the way, the blue glow of the lake’s surface kept catching my eye—I found it unexpectedly uplifting.
By then, the Taushubetsu Bridge was fully visible above the ice. Known as a “phantom bridge” because it changes dramatically with the lake’s water level, it still manages to surprise me year after year. Even around the same dates, it looks different every winter, so there’s always something new to discover.
