〈午後と夜、新雪を踏み2度アーチ橋へ〉
16年前の今日、2009年2月14日は一日に2度、タウシュベツ川橋梁に足を運んだ。月齢や天気予報から考えて、その夜は星とタウシュベツ川橋梁を撮る絶好の機会だった。ただ、その直前にまとまった雪が降り、湖面は深い新雪で覆われていた。
橋の周囲に残っていた足跡が消えるので、雪が降ったあとの撮影条件は良好。ただ、タウシュベツ川橋梁までは片道2キロ、湖上を歩かなければならない。真っ暗ななか、ガス穴の空くこともある雪原を歩くのはリスクが高いので、まずは午後の明るい時間帯に踏み跡を付け、夜はそこを辿れば良いようにした。
偵察がてら訪れた午後、西日の射す橋の光景は予想以上に美しかった。橋のコンクリートアーチが影を落とし、降りたての雪に淡い陰影が浮かぶ。
そして夜。踏み跡を辿って橋へ向かうと、晴れ渡った星空の下、タウシュベツ川橋梁のシルエットが月明かりで照らし出されていた。
Sixteen years ago today—February 14, 2009—I went to the Taushubetsu Bridge twice in one day. Based on the moon phase and weather forecast, I knew it would be a perfect chance to photograph the bridge under a starry sky that night. But a decent amount of fresh snow had just fallen, leaving the lake surface covered in deep powder.
The good news is that any footprints around the bridge were wiped clean, which can be great for photos. The downside is that you have to walk 2 kilometers each way across the lake to reach the bridge. Doing that in total darkness—especially with the risk of “gas holes” (hidden pockets in the snow)—isn’t exactly safe. So, I decided to head out in the afternoon first, set a trail, and then follow those footprints later at night.
While I was scouting the area that afternoon, the bridge in the low western sun was more beautiful than I expected. Its concrete arches cast subtle shadows on the freshly fallen snow, creating a soft contrast of light and shade.
Then came night. Following my newly made path, I walked out to the bridge and found it silhouetted against a clear, star-filled sky, gently lit by the moon. The moment felt just right—exactly what I’d hoped for.
