〈雪が降れば、風が吹く〉
雪が降る中をタウシュベツ川橋梁へと歩いていた。最近ではそうならないことも多いけれど、当時は、積もるほどの雪が降ったあとに強い風が吹き荒れることが多かった。「雪が積もったら風が来る」というパターンがよくあったように思う。
13年前の今日。2012年2月15日は、天気予報からそれを見越して、まだ雪が降りやまないうちに出かけていた。
橋に着く頃には、予報通りの、いやそれ以上の風になった。降ったばかりの軽い雪が西からの風で叩きつけるように飛ばされてくる。はじめは上から降ってくる雪にかすんでいたタウシュベツ川橋梁が、今度は横からの雪で霞んでいく。
写真を見返すとその光景はなかなかに壮絶で、今ならこんな日にわざわざ出かけるだろうか、とふと考えてしまう。とはいえ、自然とアーチ橋の競演は、厳しさと美しさを同時に見せつける瞬間だった。

I was walking toward the Taushubetsu Bridge in the middle of a snowfall. These days, it doesn’t happen as often, but back then, whenever it snowed enough to pile up, a strong wind usually followed. It felt like there was a pattern of “snow first, then wind.”
Exactly thirteen years ago—on February 15, 2012—I saw the forecast and decided to head out before the snowfall stopped.
By the time I reached the bridge, the wind was exactly as predicted—or maybe even stronger. The newly fallen snow, still light and powdery, got whipped up from the west, almost slamming into me. At first, the Taushubetsu Bridge looked hazy under the falling snow from above, but then it disappeared again behind the snow blasting in from the side.
Looking back at the photos, it was quite a dramatic scene, and I can’t help wondering if I’d go out in that weather today. Still, nature teaming up with this old arch made for a moment that was both harsh and beautiful at the same time.
