〈待ちわびた大粒の雪が降る中を〉
15年前の今日、2010年2月19日に撮影したタウシュベツ川橋梁の写真を見返している。あの朝は雪が降り続き、湖面も森の木々も白く染まっていた。
降りしきる雪の中に立つタウシュベツ川橋梁は、画になる光景のひとつ。機会があれば毎冬撮りたいシチュエーションだ。
厳冬期の十勝では、細かく軽い雪が舞うことが多い。もちろんそれこそがこの土地らしく良いものだけれど、細雪は写真にはなかなか写りにくい。逆に、この時期に気温が少しだけ和らいだときに降る大粒の雪は、しっかりと存在感を残してくれる。そのために大粒の雪が降るタイミングを待つことになる。
この日も、湖面と森と空とが同じトーンで塗り潰されていくような降りかたで、タウシュベツ川橋梁へ向かう道中でさえ視界がぼんやりかすんだ。雪の上をひたすら歩き、アーチ橋の周りでしばらくシャッターを切り、ひとときの静寂を味わう。そしてまた帰ってくる。冬の醍醐味だと思う。

Fifteen years ago today—February 19, 2010—I took these photos of the Taushubetsu Bridge. It was snowing non-stop that morning, covering both the lake and the forest in pure white.
A heavy snowfall framing the Taushubetsu Bridge is one of my favorite winter sights to capture—if I get the chance, I try to shoot it every year.
During the harshest part of winter in Tokachi, we often get light, powdery snow that’s very “Hokkaido,” but it rarely shows up clearly in photos. On the other hand, bigger flakes that tend to fall when the weather warms up a little really stand out. That’s why I’m always waiting for that perfect chance of a heavier snowfall.
That day, it was like the lake, the forest, and the sky all merged into one white tone. Even on my way to the bridge, visibility was hazy at best. But walking over the snow to reach the arch, spending a while snapping shots in the silence, and then heading back—that, to me, is what winter’s all about.
