〈キノコ氷の当たり年〉
糠平湖の冬の風物詩、キノコ氷には年によって出来不出来があるのだけれど、この2013年は当たり年だった。湖底に残る切り株に分厚い氷が乗って、個性的な形のオブジェがあちこちにできあがる光景は、まさにこの時期ならではの楽しみだと思う。
湖面の氷が厚すぎても薄すぎても、うまく“キノコ”の形にはならない。この年は、程よい厚さの氷が張ったまま、湖の水位がうまい具合に下がったようで、見事なキノコ氷がそこここにできていた。
タウシュベツ川橋梁の上にも、シーズン初めに乗った氷がそのまま残っていた。氷の重みだけでもかなりの負荷になるうえ、水位が下がるにつれて氷に削られることで、冬を通して橋のコンクリートが傷んでいく。
さらに、コンクリートに染み込んだ水分が冬の寒さで凍結・膨張し、やがて気温が上がってそれが解けて無くなることで、内部のすき間が広がり強度が落ちる。こうして、橋は少しずつ劣化を進めている。
ダム湖である糠平湖の水位変化と、厳しい気候。目を楽しませてくれるキノコ氷を作り出すのと同じ自然の力によって、タウシュベツ川橋梁は崩落へと向かっている。

In Lake Nukabira’s winter scenery, there’s a unique phenomenon called “mushroom ice,” which can be a hit or miss depending on the year. But in 2013, it was definitely a hit. Thick ice piled on old tree stumps on the lakebed, creating quirky shapes that look like works of art. It’s one of the best things to see this time of year.
If the ice is too thick or too thin, it won’t form that perfect “mushroom” shape. That season, the ice happened to be just right, and as the lake’s water level dropped, beautiful mushroom ice appeared all over the place.
On top of the Taushubetsu Bridge itself, you could still see some ice left from early in the season. The weight of the ice alone puts a heavy load on the bridge, and as the water level falls, the ice grinds against the concrete, causing damage throughout the winter.
Adding to that, any water that seeps into the concrete will freeze and expand in the winter, then melt away once the temperature rises, gradually widening gaps inside. This ongoing process slowly wears down the structure.
Between the lake’s fluctuating water level and the harsh climate of Hokkaido, the very forces that create these enchanting mushroom ice formations are also pushing the Taushubetsu Bridge toward eventual collapse.
