〈降りたての雪とタウシュベツ〉
雪が降ったあとの空気には、雨上がりとも少し違った清澄さと静けさを感じる。
4年前の今日、2021年2月23日は、早朝に三国峠へ車を走らせていた。山沿いは雪雲が残り、その雲を透かして注ぐ朝の日射しが樹海を明るくしていた。
日は徐々に高くなり、タウシュベツ川橋梁を撮りはじめる頃には、その雲が流れ去って青空が広がっていた。対岸にあるタウシュベツ川橋梁との間には、音更川が黒々と流れている。
糠平湖では、冬のあいだ氷に閉ざされていたこの川の水面が、近づいてくる春と重なる。せせらぎの音や、川の流れが、まだ氷点下の雪景色の中にも春を連想させるのだ。
ここ数年、タウシュベツ川橋梁では側壁の崩落が続いている。わずか4年前とはいえ、このときの橋の姿はもう残っていない。

There’s a special clarity and stillness in the air after a snowfall, different from the freshness you get after rain. Four years ago today—February 23, 2021—I drove out early to Mikuni Pass. Snow clouds still lingered in the mountains, but the morning sunlight filtering through them made the forest glow.
As the sun rose higher, by the time I started photographing the Taushubetsu Bridge, the clouds had drifted away, leaving a bright blue sky. Between me and the bridge on the opposite shore, the Otofuke River ran dark against the white landscape.
In winter, this river normally hides beneath the frozen surface of Lake Nukabira, so seeing the water start to show signals the approach of spring. The gentle sound of the current and the dark flow of the river evoke a sense of springtime, even in subzero snowfields.
In recent years, the Taushubetsu Bridge has been losing sections of its walls. Though this photo was taken only four years ago, the version of the bridge you see here no longer exists.
