〈タウシュベツは青氷の下から〉
年によって、同じ時期でもタウシュベツ川橋梁の見え方がまったく違う――そんな話を、これまで幾度となくしてきた。3年前の今日、2022年2月24日に撮影した写真を見返していると、その言葉がより真に迫って感じられた。
この2025年冬とは対照的に、3年前は例年になく糠平湖の水位が高かった。2月も残り数日という時期でも、タウシュベツ川橋梁はまだ半分以上が氷の下に沈んだままだった。
しかも、橋の上には青く分厚い氷がかぶさり、軽く数トンはあるだろう重みに耐えるアーチの姿を眺めていると、いよいよこの冬で橋が崩れるのではないかと思えた。
それにしても、初めてこの場面を目にしたら、まるで氷の下からコンクリートの建造物が生えてきたようにも見える光景だ。そんな光景が糠平湖で見られるのは、水位変動が大きな人造湖であり、氷が厚くなる厳しい寒さという条件があってこそ。
考えてみると、じつにレアな状況の中にタウシュベツ川橋梁は立っている。
先日テレビ朝日「スーパーJチャンネル」でコメントしたばかりだけれど、今年のように氷の負荷が少ない年は、橋にとっては良いことなのだろう。

Every year, the Taushubetsu Bridge can look totally different—even around the same time. Flipping through photos from this exact day three years ago, February 24, 2022, I’m reminded of just how true that is.
Unlike this winter in 2025, the water level at Lake Nukabira was unusually high back then. Even with only a few days left in February, more than half of the Taushubetsu Bridge was still hidden beneath the ice. What’s more, a thick, bright-blue layer of ice rested on top of it—easily weighing a few tons. Staring at the arch under that kind of load, I couldn’t help wondering if it would finally collapse that season.
Honestly, if someone saw that scene for the first time, it would look like a concrete structure sprouting from under the ice. That’s the kind of view you get only when a man-made lake with big water-level changes meets a really cold winter—perfect conditions for thick ice. In hindsight, it’s a very rare situation for the Taushubetsu Bridge to be stuck in.
I recently mentioned on a TV program (TV Asahi’s “Super J Channel”) how a year with less ice pressure, like this one, is probably better for the bridge’s survival. But three years ago, that heavy blue ice made me think the arch was done for.
