〈モモンガの森を抜けて、氷の中のタウシュベツへ〉
3年前の今日、2022年3月2日。森の中では、めったに日中姿を見せないエゾモモンガを見かけた。この辺りで感じられる春の兆しのひとつ。ふだん明るい時間帯に出てくることはないのだけれど、発情期を迎えた短いあいだだけ、あちこちに顔を出す。
タウシュベツ川橋梁は、まだ全体の6～7割ほどしか氷上に姿を現していなかった。残りはまだ厚い氷の下に隠れていた。
同じ時期でも、今年（2025年）のように1月末で糠平湖への立ち入りが禁止となるほど水位が低いこともあるので、年によってどれだけ状況が違うかを改めて思い知らされる。
氷点下2ケタにもなる冷え込みが湖面に厚さ30センチ以上はありそうな氷板を作る。それが橋から落ちたり、もたれかかったりしていた。崩れそうで崩れない橋のコンクリートアーチと、割れた分厚い氷の板が作る光景が、冬ならではの迫力を感じさせた。
Three years ago today—March 2, 2022—I spotted an Ezo flying squirrel in the daytime, which almost never happens around here. It’s a sign that spring is near—during their short mating season, these squirrels sometimes show up in broad daylight.
Back then, only about 60–70% of the Taushubetsu Bridge was visible above the ice. The rest was still hidden beneath a thick layer. Comparing that to this year (2025), when the water level got so low that they closed off the lake by the end of January, you realize just how different things can be from one year to another.
The subzero temperatures—easily in the double digits below zero—had created ice slabs seemingly 30 centimeters thick, which had cracked off and either fallen from the bridge or were leaning against it. The sight of that heavily cracked ice along with the crumbling concrete arches gave off an intense “winter only” vibe that still sticks with me.
