〈月下、彫刻のような橋脚を見上げて〉
12年前の今日2013年3月5日。
この日は未明から星空を撮るためにタウシュベツ川橋梁を目指していた。3月上旬にもかかわらず、湖上へ立ち入ることができた年だった。
天気予報通りだったのか、それとも外れだったのか。今でははっきり思い出せないけれど、星空目当てだった空には薄い雲が流れていた。
月明かりがほんのりと雪面を照らすなか、無人の湖上で橋を見上げる。月の光で彫刻のように橋脚が浮かび上がる光景は、この時期ならではのものだ。
この夜、山では雪になっていたようで、日の出に合わせて向かった三国峠から見下ろした樹海は真っ白に染まっていた。
Twelve years ago today—March 5, 2013—I set out before dawn to photograph the starry sky around the Taushubetsu Bridge. Even though it was early March, that year the ice was still thick enough to walk on the lake.
I can’t quite remember if the weather forecast was right or wrong. Either way, thin clouds drifted across what I’d hoped would be a clear sky. Under soft moonlight reflecting on the snow, I stood alone on the lake, gazing up at the bridge. Its pillars looked almost sculpted by the glow of the moon—a sight that only feels possible at this time of year.
Apparently, the mountains got some snow during the night, because by the time I headed to Mikuni Pass for the sunrise, the forest below was completely white. It was quite a contrast to the lake scene, where a gentle moonlit glow and thin clouds gave me just a hint of winter’s finale.
