〈雪景色の中に春が透ける〉
8年前の今日、2017年3月6日。
いま振り返れば、今年（2025年）と比べて1ヵ月以上も長く湖上を歩けた年だった。3月上旬になっても、スノーシューを履いて糠平湖を横断し、タウシュベツ川橋梁まで出かけていた。
日射しはすでに春に近く、サングラス越しにも眩しさを感じるほど。その光を受けて、冬の名残であるキノコ氷も少しずつ形が崩れはじめていた。日中の気温がプラスになる日が増えてくると、厳寒期にできあがった氷の造形は見納めだ。
氷が割れたことで現れたタウシュベツ川の黒い水面や、すでに土がのぞく湖底を見ると、“冬が終わる”というよりも“次の季節がやってくる”という実感がある。
いっぽうで、そうした季節の変化と同じく、橋そのものの劣化もはっきり目に見えてきた。
崩れそうで崩れない、けれど少しずつ痩せている――それがタウシュベツ川橋梁だ。冬の終わりの気配を感じるたびに、“橋もまた終わりに近づいている”ことも感じさせられる。
当時は、タウシュベツ川橋梁を訪れる人の数が年々増えていたころだ。この冬も、多くの人々が「崩落間近」の橋のある風景をカメラに収めていた。
Eight years ago today, on March 6, 2017, we could still easily walk across Lake Nukabira – a whole month longer than we can this year (2025). Even in early March, I put on my snowshoes and headed out toward the Taushubetsu Bridge.
The sunlight already felt like spring, almost glaring through my sunglasses. That warmth was starting to melt the “mushroom ice,” the last remnants of a harsh winter. Once daytime highs get above freezing, those unique ice shapes don’t last much longer.
Where the ice cracked, you could see the dark water of the Taushubetsu River flowing below, and in some places, the lakebed was even peeking through. Rather than saying “winter’s ending,” it felt more like “the next season is on its way.”
Meanwhile, the bridge itself was clearly showing signs of wear and tear, in step with the changing seasons. It’s that classic “about to collapse yet still hanging on” vibe that defines the Taushubetsu Bridge. Each hint of winter fading makes me realize the bridge may also be nearing its final days.
Back then, more and more people were coming each year to see this “on the brink of collapse” bridge. Even this winter, plenty of folks snapped photos of the scene – a reminder that the bridge’s uncertain future is part of its enduring appeal.
