〈この日も湖上を歩いて橋へ〉
15年前の今日、3月7日。午後になってから糠平湖の上を歩き、タウシュベツ川橋梁へ向かっていた。あの年は、まだこの時期でも湖上を歩くことができた。
ただ、音更川が湖に流れ込むあたりでは、氷が割れはじめていた。そのため、まっすぐ橋へ向かうルートではなく、いったん糠平湖を横断して対岸の岸伝いに歩いた。
当時、10年もすれば橋は崩れ落ちて、この風景も見られなくなるだろうと想像しながら写真を撮っていた。ところが、10年どころか15年経ったいまでも、タウシュベツ川橋梁はかろうじて姿を保ち続けている。思った以上に粘り強いこの橋を撮りつづけながら、この頃を振り返ることになるとは考えもしていなかった。
もっとも、やはり“往時の橋の姿”はもうない。コンクリートの壁が崩れ、アーチの一部はすでにかけらを落としている。いま見ている形が次の冬も変わらずにあるとは限らないし、一つながりのアーチを保っているのは、いつまでだろう。
Fifteen years ago today, on March 7, I set out in the afternoon, walking across the frozen Lake Nukabira toward the Taushubetsu Bridge. Back then, it was still possible to walk on the lake this late in the season.
However, near the mouth of the Otofuke River, the ice had started to crack, so I couldn’t just head straight for the bridge. Instead, I crossed the lake and followed the far shore.
At the time, I figured the bridge would collapse within ten years and this view would be gone for good. But it’s now been fifteen years, and the Taushubetsu Bridge is still clinging to its shape. I never imagined I’d still be photographing it and looking back on these moments.
Of course, the original form is long gone. Concrete walls have fallen away, and parts of the arches are missing. The version I see now might not even last through the next winter, and I keep wondering how much longer it’ll stay in one piece.
