〈雪の中、キタキツネがやってきた〉
8年前の今日、2017年3月11日の写真を見返している。
この日は、春が近づいた時期ならではの大粒の雪が降りしきっていた。水位がだいぶ下がった糠平湖で、音更川が流れる湖底まで降りてタウシュベツ川橋梁を撮っていると、遠くにキタキツネの姿が見えた。
カラスやオジロワシの脇を抜けて、いつの間にか少しずつこちらへ近づいてきた。そのうちにどこからともなくもう一匹が加わり、二匹でエサの取り合いなどをはじめた。人慣れしているわけでも警戒しているわけでもない、不思議な距離感だった。
大粒の雪に降られながら、その微笑ましいやりとりを間近で眺めていると、冷たい空気の中にも、なんだかほのぼのした気持ちになった。
そういえば、あの日は橋を撮りに来ていたはずなのに、途中からずっとキツネばかり撮っていた記憶がある。
すっかり忘れていた光景だけれど、こうして写真を見返すと、そのときの様子をありありと思い出した。
Eight years ago today—March 11, 2017—I’m looking back at some old photos. On that day, large, almost spring-like snowflakes were falling steadily. I’d gone to Lake Nukabira, where the water level had dropped enough to walk down to the riverbed of the Otofuke River, aiming to photograph the Taushubetsu Bridge. Then I noticed a fox in the distance.
It snuck past crows and white-tailed eagles, gradually making its way closer to me. Before long, another one appeared, and the two of them started tussling over scraps of food. They weren’t tame, yet they didn’t seem especially wary either—an unusual balance. Standing there in the heavy snowfall, watching them interact up close gave me an oddly comforting feeling despite the cold.
Come to think of it, I went there to shoot the bridge, but I ended up spending most of my time snapping photos of the foxes instead. I’d all but forgotten that scene, but flipping through these pictures now, the memories come rushing back as if it happened yesterday.
