〈のどかな春の日にキタキツネを眺めて〉
8年前の今日、2017年3月15日。音更川をはさんで対岸のタウシュベツ川橋梁を撮っていた。まだ雪が残る湖底を見渡しながらも、春の気配が少しずつ感じられたころだ。
ここは大雪山国立公園の中にあり、エゾシカやキタキツネなどの野生動物が姿を見せることは珍しくない。ただ、タウシュベツ川橋梁付近で、となると、出くわすことは意外と多くない。
この日は、その“珍しい”場面にであった。春ののどかさに引き寄せられたかのように、キタキツネが現れ、とくになにをする様子もなく川岸を歩いていった。僕もまた、ただただその様子を見送っていた。
あたりには人の気配などなく、雪と川のせせらぎが耳に届く程度。季節が移りゆく糠平湖の静かさと、キタキツネのそっけないほどの自然体な振る舞いがじつに穏やかさなものに感じられた。
Eight years ago today—March 15, 2017—I was standing across the Otofuke River, photographing the Taushubetsu Bridge. Even though patches of snow still covered the lakebed, you could sense the shift towards spring.
Being in Daisetsuzan National Park, spotting wildlife like Ezo deer or red foxes isn’t that unusual. But actually encountering them by the Taushubetsu Bridge? That’s a rarer sight.
On this day, though, I got lucky. A red fox suddenly appeared, as if drawn by the mellow feel of early spring. It walked along the riverbank, not doing much of anything, while I just stood there and watched it wander by.
There were no other people around—just the sound of snow and the river’s gentle flow. Somehow, the quiet transition of seasons on Lake Nukabira and the fox’s casual behavior made everything feel remarkably calm.
