〈吹き荒れる風は土の色〉
8年前の今日、2017年3月19日は、風の強い日だった。この辺りでは、春が近づくとこんな日がある。
ほんの一ヵ月前には厚い氷に覆われていた場所。気温が上がり、湖の氷が割れて川の流れが現れた今は、土が露出した湖底から砂塵が舞い上がり、音更川をはさんでタウシュベツ川橋梁を眺めていると、茶色い風景が広がっていた。
いわゆる「春」という言葉からイメージする温かさや爽快さはないけれど、土色のこうした光景こそが北国の春らしい風景のようにも思う。
とはいえ、湖底のすべてが土色になっているわけではない。まだ氷が分厚く残る部分もあった。日本各地からそろそろ桜の開花のたよりが届くころだけれど、北海道の山中からすっかり氷雪が消えてしまうには、まだ時間がかかる。
Eight years ago today, on March 19, 2017, we had a day of strong winds. Around here, that’s often what happens when spring draws near.
Just a month ago, this place was covered in thick ice. But now, as the temperature rose and the lake ice broke to reveal the river current, the lakebed was exposed and dust was blowing everywhere. Looking across the Otofuke River at the Taushubetsu Bridge, I saw the landscape turning a dusty brown.
It’s not the warm, refreshing “spring” many people imagine, but somehow these earthy colors feel like a true northern spring to me.
That said, not the entire lakebed has turned brown yet. There are still areas where the ice remains quite thick. While other parts of Japan may be talking about cherry blossoms right now, it’ll still be a while before all the ice and snow here in the mountains of Hokkaido finally disappear.
