〈橋までの数百メートルが遠い時期〉
8年前の今日、2017年3月25日。糠平湖の湖底では、音更川に沿って大きく氷が割れていた。山あいの厳しい冬を少しずつ抜け出すこの時期、真冬には味わえないダイナミックな光景が現れる。
4月下旬に林道の雪が消えるまでは、ここからタウシュベツ川橋梁までの数百メートルが遠く感じる。湖面を横断できないので、めったに人が近づくことのない時期のタウシュベツ川橋梁は、一年のうちで最も静かなときを過ごしている。
日ごとに雪解けが進むこの季節は、写真を撮る側としても変化が楽しい。寒暖差でできたつらら状の造形や、氷に閉じ込められた気泡「アイスバブル」を下から“見上げる”構図も、この時期ならではだ。
Eight years ago today, March 25, 2017, I found the lakebed of Lake Nukabira along the Otofuke River splitting wide open. During this time of year, the harsh mountain winter is slowly letting go, creating dynamic scenes you don't typically see in midwinter.
Until late April, when the snow on the forest roads melts, it feels like a long way from here to the Taushubetsu Bridge. Since you can’t just walk across the lake, hardly anyone visits the bridge at this time—making it the quietest period of the year there.
As the snow melts day by day, there’s plenty for a photographer to enjoy. Icicle-like formations caused by temperature swings and trapped air pockets in the ice—commonly known as “ice bubbles”—can now be observed from underneath the ice, offering viewpoints unique to this season.
