〈名残りの雪と橋上のオオワシ〉
2年前の今日、2023年3月27日は、朝から糠平湖に出かけてタウシュベツ川橋梁を撮っていた。北海道の山あいでは、3月下旬になってもまだ雪が降ることは珍しくない。この日も、一度解けていた湖底がまた冬の装いに逆戻りしていた。
流れの穏やかな水面には、渡り鳥の姿がちらほら見える。かすかな風の音と水のせせらぎが、静かな湖の空気に溶け込んでいた。
雪雲がやがて消えると、冬の名残を感じさせる澄んだ青空が広がった。白い雪原とのコントラストが際立つ。タウシュベツ川橋梁の上には、オオワシが一羽、羽を休めていた。
崩れそうで崩れない橋のシルエットと、堂々としたオオワシの姿はなんとも静かで荘厳な光景だった。
この季節、日本各地ではそろそろ桜の便りが届きはじめている。しかし、ここではまだ冬から春へと移り行くあわいの時期だ。
Two years ago today, on March 27, 2023, I headed out early in the morning to Lake Nukabira to photograph the Taushubetsu Bridge. In this mountainous area of Hokkaido, it’s not unusual to see fresh snow in late March, and sure enough, the lakebed that had begun to thaw was back to a wintery white.
A few migratory birds floated on the calm water, their gentle calls blending with the soft sound of wind and water. Eventually, the snow clouds cleared, revealing a crisp blue sky that still hinted at winter. The contrast of pure white snow against the deep sky was striking. Up on the Taushubetsu Bridge, I spotted a single Steller's sea eagle resting quietly.
Seeing that imposing bird atop the silhouette of a bridge that’s famously “on the brink of collapse, yet still standing” was both tranquil and majestic. While much of Japan might be receiving news of cherry blossoms around this time, here, we’re still in that in-between zone—where winter slowly yields to spring.
