〈春から冬へと逆戻り〉
9年前の今日、2016年3月28日の糠平湖は雪が降って景色が白く染まっていた。いったん土色になりはじめていた湖底が、また雪景色へと戻る。こんなふうに、解けたり積もったりを繰り返しながら、北海道の春は少しずつ近づいてくるのだ。
白くなった音更川のほとりには無数の流木が転がっていた。いつもなら、ただの残骸にも見えるそれが妙に印象的で、一種のオブジェのように目に映る。春の雪はそれほど長く残らないので、降りつもる時間にだけ見られる光景だ。
冬でも春でもない、この季節の混じり合いこそが北国の3月の魅力かもしれない。
Nine years ago today, on March 28, 2016, Lake Nukabira turned white again under fresh snowfall. The lakebed had started turning brown, only to be covered in snow once more. This back-and-forth between melting and new snow is how spring gradually approaches in Hokkaido.
Along the banks of the Otofuke River, countless pieces of driftwood lay scattered. What might usually look like leftover debris suddenly appeared striking, almost like art installations. Since snow in spring doesn’t usually stick around for long, this view feels special, only visible during the short time when the flakes are falling.
Maybe the real charm of March in northern regions is that it’s neither fully winter nor fully spring. It’s that in-between phase where nature showcases a little of both seasons at once.
