〈かつて、4月はまだ冬だった＞
14年前の今日、2011年4月2日のタウシュベツ川橋梁。写真を見返すと、まだ氷が厚く、雪もたっぷり残っている。今年であれば2月半ばの光景だと言っても分からないほどだ。
ここ数年は、3月末にもなるとだいぶ春らしい様子に変わる湖底も、この頃は、冬景色のまま4月を迎えていたようだ。
湖底を流れるタウシュベツ川は、ところどころ黒い流れが見えている程度。冬の延長ともいえるこの光景も、やがて雪解けのタイミングを迎えれば、一気に春へ向かって進んでいく。
そんな季節の移ろいを待っているようにも見える、静かな4月初めのタウシュベツ川橋梁だった。
Fourteen years ago today, on April 2, 2011, the Taushubetsu Bridge was still surrounded by thick ice and plenty of snow. Looking back at the pictures now, you’d think it was mid-February by how wintry it appears. In more recent years, by the end of March the lakebed usually shows more signs of spring, but back then it held onto its winter look well into April.
As for the river running along the lakebed, only bits of black water peeked through the ice. It was like winter’s last stand, waiting for the moment when the snow would finally melt and give way to spring in one big rush. Until then, the Taushubetsu Bridge stood quietly, as if pausing on the edge of two seasons, not quite ready to shed its blanket of snow and ice.
